Description

Tokyo Flag

The green symbol on white: the flag of Tokyo

This Tokyo flag is a white field with, in the centre, a large bright green symbol: a broad shape, rounded at the top, that narrows towards the bottom into a slender stem. It is the symbol flag of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the one seen at sporting events and public events in Japan's capital.

A T hidden in three arcs

Its outline suggests a leaf, but the design hides a letter. According to the Metropolitan Government's description, the symbol carries at its centre the «T» of Tokyo, the initial of the city's name, and is built from three identical arcs of a circle. Its base colour is a vivid green.

The meaning of the green

The symbol, the Metropolitan Government says again, expresses the future of Tokyo: its dynamism, its prosperity, its freshness and its serenity. It is a modern image, designed for a city that looks ahead.

Born in 1989

The symbol was established on 1 June 1989 by a notice of the Metropolitan Government. A few months later, on 30 September 1989, a second notice created the Tokyo symbol flag: the white field, with the bright green symbol in the centre. It is the flag you see on this page.

Tokyo's two flags

Tokyo also has a second, more solemn flag, created on 1 October 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics: its field is Edo purple, a colour loved in Tokyo since olden times, with the city's emblem in white at the centre, a sun sending out six rays, symbol of Tokyo at the centre of Japan. The purple flag is used above all for official occasions; the green one on white accompanies sporting events and public events. The ginkgo, meanwhile, has been Tokyo's tree since 1966.

Who chooses it

For anyone who has lived or worked in Tokyo, for anyone with Japanese roots living in Italy or Europe, for the families and associations of the Japanese community, for a Japanese restaurant or an Asian food shop, for a martial arts club, for a school or an event devoted to Japan, for a traveller who wants to remember the capital, for a collector of city flags. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
