Description

The Republic of Nagorno Karabakh Flag

The Armenian tricolour with the stepped pattern: the flag of Nagorno-Karabakh

The flag of Nagorno-Karabakh has three horizontal bands, red, blue and orange, and on the side away from the pole a white stepped pattern, with five teeth, that starts from the two edges and joins towards the centre. It is the flag of the republic that Armenians called Artsakh, which existed in the southern Caucasus from 1991 to 1 January 2024.

The colours of Armenia

The three colours are those of the flag of Armenia, a red, blue and orange tricolour of horizontal bands. The flag of Nagorno-Karabakh took them up in the same order, from top to bottom. Anyone who knows the Armenian flag recognises it at once, and notices the difference in the white pattern.

The pattern of the rugs

The white stepped pattern is the most original part of the design. According to contributors to the Flags of the World archive, it recalls the designs of the famous Armenian rugs. The 2006 Constitution described it precisely: a white five-toothed stepped pattern that starts from the two edges of the right side of the flag and joins at one third of its length.

A self-proclaimed republic

The republic was proclaimed on 2 September 1991, in the last months of the Soviet Union, confirmed by a referendum on 10 December 1991 and declared independent in early 1992. Under international law the territory remained part of Azerbaijan. With the 2017 Constitution it took the name of Republic of Artsakh, and the flag stayed the same.

The end, on 1 January 2024

In September 2023, after a military operation by Azerbaijan, the president of the republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree dissolving all state institutions by 1 January 2024, the date on which the republic ceased to exist, although its leaders in exile later declared the decree void. Today this flag is a historical flag, bound to the memory of the Armenians who lived in that region.

Who chooses it

For Armenian families with roots in Nagorno-Karabakh and for the Armenian communities in Italy and Europe who keep its memory, for collectors of historical flags and of states that no longer exist, for anyone who studies the history of the Caucasus, for schools, museums and exhibitions, for anyone who writes about or researches that region. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
