Samoa Flag

Red with the Southern Cross: the flag of Samoa

The flag of Samoa is a red field with, in the upper quarter by the pole, a blue rectangle bearing five white five-pointed stars: the constellation of the Southern Cross, with one star smaller than the others. Two strong colours and a sky full of stars: this is the Samoan flag.

Three colours, three virtues

In the most widespread interpretation, white stands for purity, blue for freedom and red for courage. The Southern Cross is an emblem dear to many countries of the southern hemisphere, and it also appears on the flags of Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.

The first flag, in 1873

Samoa's first truly national flag appears to date from 2 October 1873: red, with a white cross reaching the edges and a white star in the upper corner by the pole. From 1886 to 1889, under King Tamasese, a black cross appeared on the white one. In 1900 the islands were divided between the United States and Germany, and for years local flags had no place.

From 1948, with New Zealand

In the twentieth century the western part of the islands, formerly German, was administered by New Zealand, first as a League of Nations mandate and then as a United Nations trusteeship. The local flag born in those years echoes the New Zealand flag in its colours, its Southern Cross and its field-and-canton design. It was introduced on 26 May 1948 with four stars; on 24 February 1949 the fifth, smallest star was added.

Independence and 1 June

On 1 January 1962 Western Samoa became independent, the first Polynesian nation to gain sovereignty in the twentieth century, and the flag stayed the same. In July 1997 the country took the name Samoa, and the flag is described in detail by the Flag and National Anthem of Samoa Act of 1994. Independence Day is celebrated on 1 June, in Samoa and in the Samoan community of New Zealand. The flag also flies in stadiums: Samoa's football federation is a member of the Oceania Confederation, and the country takes part in the Pacific Games.

Who chooses it

For people from Samoa living in Italy or Europe, for families with Samoan roots and their associations, for fans of the national team at the OFC Nations Cup or the Pacific Games, for a school, a model UN or a multicultural festival, for a restaurant or shop bringing the flavours of the Pacific, for a traveller, for a flag collector. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
