Pitcairn Islands Flag

The Bounty on a flag: the flag of the Pitcairn Islands

The flag of the Pitcairn Islands is a British Blue Ensign: a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper corner next to the staff and, on the fly, the islands' coat of arms. In that coat of arms, in a few signs, lies one of the most famous sea stories of all time: the mutiny on the Bounty.

The mutineers and the island

In 1789 the Bounty was sailing from Tahiti towards the West Indies with a cargo of breadfruit saplings. The crew, led by the first mate Fletcher Christian, mutinied and set Captain William Bligh adrift with a number of loyal sailors. In 1790 the mutineers and their Tahitian companions reached Pitcairn, then uninhabited, went ashore and burned the ship. Today's islanders are descended from them.

The Bible, the anchor and the wheelbarrow

The coat of arms was granted by Royal Warrant on 4 November 1969. On the blue shield a green triangle edged in gold rises from the base, and on it are the Bounty Bible and the gold anchor of the Bounty. At the top of the arms, as the crest, is a scene of daily life: the Pitcairn Island wheelbarrow in front of a slip of miro, a tree of the island, with leaves and fruit.

A flag of 1984

A flag of its own came late. The design was suggested by the Island Council in December 1980 and approved by Queen Elizabeth II in April 1984; in May 1984 it flew on Pitcairn for the first time, during a visit by the Governor. Since then it has been the territory's flag, with the Union Jack in the canton recalling the link with the United Kingdom.

Four islands, one inhabited

Pitcairn is a British overseas territory made up of four islands, Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno, but only Pitcairn is inhabited, with the village of Adamstown; Henderson, a coral atoll almost untouched by humans, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 1856, because of overpopulation, some of the islanders moved to Norfolk Island, and to this day the mutineers' descendants are divided between the two places. Every 23 January, a public holiday, Bounty Day recalls the burning of the ship: the islanders burn a replica of the Bounty at The Landing.

Who chooses it

For anyone who has read the story of the Bounty or seen it at the cinema, for sailing and naval history enthusiasts, for anyone with roots on Pitcairn or Norfolk, for a collector of British overseas territory flags, for philatelists who know the island's stamps, for a school or a model UN. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
