Description

Imperial Japan Flag

The sun and sixteen rays: the Rising Sun flag

The Rising Sun flag is a white field with a red disc set towards the pole, from which sixteen red rays run out to the edges. It is not Japan's national flag, which is the plain red disc on white, but its naval war ensign: the one that flew on the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The first sun with rays, 1870

The symbol of the sun with rays was born in 1870, in the first years of the Meiji era. That year the Great Council of State set out the country's flags: the red disc on white for merchant ships and the Navy, and for the Army a flag with the sun and sixteen rays. For almost twenty years it was the soldiers, not the sailors, who carried the rayed sun.

The Navy's flag, 1889

On 7 October 1889 the Imperial Navy in turn adopted the sun with sixteen rays, but with the disc set towards the pole: it is the flag in this picture. The Army's regimental colours also bore the sun with sixteen rays. The Navy used it until the end of the Second World War, in 1945.

From 1954 to today

After the war the flag was set aside, but in 1954 it was adopted again as the ensign of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, Japan's navy of today. It is still the flag flown on its ships, while the ground and air self-defence forces have flags of their own.

A debated symbol

Because of its history, the Rising Sun flag is associated with Imperial Japan and with the years of the Pacific War and of rule over Korea, from 1910 to 1945. Today its display is a matter of debate, particularly in South Korea.

Who chooses it

For a collector of military and naval flags, for anyone who studies the history of Japan from the Meiji era to the Second World War, for enthusiasts of naval history and model making, for museums and exhibitions, for a film or theatre set in those years. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
