Description

Howe Island Flag

A golden sun in the Pacific: the flag of Lord Howe Island

This is the flag of Lord Howe Island, a small Australian island in the Tasman Sea. On a royal blue field run an upright cross and a diagonal cross in white, like rays, and at the centre is a large yellow disc with the outline of the island: the mountains, a palm and the sea. It is not a flag established by law, but it is the one that has flown on the island since 1998.

An island born of a volcano

Lord Howe is part of New South Wales and lies in the Tasman Sea, about 570 kilometres east of Port Macquarie. It was born of volcanic activity that began more than two thousand metres below the sea, it has spectacular mountains, a coral reef and many species that live only there, especially birds. Since 1982 the Lord Howe Island Group has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The name of an admiral

The island was discovered in 1788 by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, of HMS Supply, and was named in honour of Admiral Lord Howe. The flag is inspired by the admiral himself: its design takes up the command flag that Lord Howe flew in the naval battle of the «Glorious First of June», in 1794.

The sun, the rays and the crosses

It was designed by John C. Vaughan, a Sydney vexillologist, who explains its symbols like this: the golden sun recalls the warmth and friendliness of the islanders, the silver rays shimmer on the blue waters of the Pacific, and against the sun stand the outlines of the island. The rays are also the crosses of Saint George and Saint Andrew, those of the old British flag.

On the island since 1998

Vaughan proposed the flag to the island council on 24 May 1993. In November 1998 it was raised at various vantage points across the island and has flown ever since, though without formal recognition. The history, heritage and landscape of the island were its inspiration, and for those who have been there it is a piece of Lord Howe to take home.

Who chooses it

For those who have visited Lord Howe or dream of going, for Australians living in Italy and Europe, for lovers of Pacific islands, birdwatching and diving, for a themed bar, for a school studying UNESCO heritage sites and for collectors of rare flags. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
