Gran Colombia Flag

Yellow, blue and red: the flag of Gran Colombia

The flag of Gran Colombia has three horizontal stripes, yellow, blue and red, and in the centre the Republic's coat of arms: an oval with two cornucopias full of fruit and flowers, a bundle of lances with an axe, bows and arrows, and around it the words «República de Colombia», all within a laurel wreath. It is the flag of the state that, between 1819 and 1830, united today's Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Panama.

Miranda's tricolour

The three colours come from Francisco de Miranda, the Venezuelan patriot who designed them and whose flag the first government of Venezuela adopted in 1811. Simón Bolívar carried them with him in his campaigns for South America's independence from Spain. It is said that they stood for golden America separated from bloody Spain by the blue of the sea.

A republic called Colombia

On 17 December 1819, at the congress of Angostura, the Republic of Colombia was proclaimed, uniting Venezuela, New Granada, that is today's Colombia and Panama, and Quito, today's Ecuador. At the time it was simply called Colombia: Gran Colombia is the name historians use to tell it apart from the present-day state.

The arms of Cúcuta

In 1821 the congress gathered at Villa del Rosario de Cúcuta gave the Republic its Constitution and its coat of arms. The law of 6 October 1821 describes it like this: two cornucopias full of fruit and flowers, a bundle of lances with an axe, bows and arrows crossed, tied with a tricolour ribbon, a symbol of abundance, strength and union, with the words «República de Colombia». The arms took their place on the tricolour.

Three flags from one

Gran Colombia lasted little more than ten years. In 1830 Venezuela proclaimed its independence, Quito and Guayaquil separated and Bolívar left power. The three new states, however, kept Miranda's tricolour: to this day the flags of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela carry yellow, blue and red.
