England Flag

Red cross on white: the English flag of St George

The flag of England, the English flag in the strictest sense, is the cross of St George: a red cross on a white field. A very simple design, which the English have carried with them for more than seven centuries.

The mark of Edward I's soldiers

From the reign of Edward I, in the 1270s, English soldiers seem to have worn red crosses as a distinguishing mark. For the historian Perrin, it is to that king that the Cross of St George owes its introduction as England's national emblem.

Genoa and Richard the Lionheart

The story goes that in 1190 English ships heading into the Mediterranean adopted the cross of St George so as to have safe passage into the port of Genoa. Another tradition says Richard the Lionheart chose it. They are much-loved tales, but the records do not bear them out.

The saint and the Union Jack

From 1415 St George's Day was one of the great feasts of the English calendar. In 1606 his cross became part of the design of the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom, where it can still be seen today.

The flag of a nation

Today the cross of St George is the national flag of England, one of the nations that make up the United Kingdom. It is the flag England shows when it stands on its own, alongside the Union Jack of the whole United Kingdom.

Who chooses it

For a football or rugby fan, for anyone with English roots, for a pub, for an English language school, for a business that works with England, for a twinned town. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
