Description

Cocos Islands and Keeling Flag

Green and gold on the ocean: the flag of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The flag of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a green field with three gold symbols: at the top, near the hoist, a golden disc with a coconut palm; in the centre a crescent; towards the fly the stars of the Southern Cross. It is the flag of a small group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, roughly halfway between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Islands of palms and seafarers

The islands were sighted in 1609 by Captain William Keeling of the East India Company, and take their second name from him. They remained uninhabited until 1826. Soon after, the Scotsman John Clunies-Ross started coconut plantations here, and for more than a century his family ran the life of the atolls. Since 1955 the Cocos have been an Australian territory.

The vote of 6 April 1984

On 6 April 1984, in a referendum supervised by the United Nations, the islanders chose between integration with Australia, free association and independence: 229 of the 261 people eligible voted for integration. Since then 6 April has been Act of Self-Determination Day, celebrated with races of jukong, the traditional wooden boats, with dances and with an evening ball.

Designed by a boy from the islands

The flag was born from a community competition, won by Mohammed Minkom when he was still a teenager, in the 1990s. According to the islands' Shire, it was officially adopted on 6 April 2004, on the very anniversary of the vote.

The palm, the moon and the Southern Cross

According to the islands' Shire, the coconut palm is the trademark of the Cocos, green and gold are Australia's sporting colours, the Southern Cross comes from the Australian national flag, and the crescent, beside the stars, stands for the variety of cultures living together on the atolls, home of the Cocos Malay community. Beside it, on the islands, flies the Australian flag, the national flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone who has lived or worked on the Cocos Islands, for people with Cocos Malay or Australian roots living in Italy or Europe, for travellers and divers who have visited the atolls and want a keepsake, for collectors of the flags of Australian territories, for schools and multicultural festivals and for model UN events. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
