Description

City of Genoa Flag

The red cross on white: the flag of Genoa

The flag of Genoa is white, crossed by a red cross that divides it into four. It is the cross of Saint George, the Genoese flag par excellence: the one that for centuries sailed the Mediterranean on the Republic's galleys and that is still the flag of the city today.

Written in the Statute

Genoa has set down its flag in black and white. The Comune's Statute says so from its first article: the Comune of Genoa has its own coat of arms and its own flag, «both a red cross on a white field», and its own gonfalone, decorated with the gold medal for military valour for its contribution to the Resistance and showing Saint George slaying the dragon.

From the banner of Saint George to the cross

The Genoese Annals already speak in 1198 of the «vexillum beati Georgii», the banner of Saint George: a red cloth with the saint on horseback striking the dragon. Alongside it came the ensign of the Comune, the red cross on white, first recorded on 28 September 1218, when it flew over Ventimiglia after the town surrendered to Genoa. By 1242 the cross was already hoisted on the galleys.

The flag of the Republic

For almost six centuries the red cross on white was the flag of the Republic of Genoa, on land and at sea, until 1805. The banner with Saint George remained the admiral's ensign, on the commander's galley; the cross became the sign of the whole city. The saint on horseback has not disappeared: today he is on the Comune's gonfalone.

Genoa and England

It is said that the cross of Saint George was granted to English ships entering the Mediterranean, so that they could enjoy the protection of the Genoese fleet, and that the King of England paid a tribute to the Doge for it. Historians find no documents to support it, but in Genoa the story is still gladly told.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is Genoese or has roots in Liguria, for families who emigrated and Genoese associations around the world, for the Comune, the city's schools and associations, for sailing clubs, regattas and sea festivals, for fans of Genoa or Sampdoria, for a focaccia bakery, a trattoria or a shop selling Ligurian products, for anyone who has visited Genoa and wants to take a piece of it home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
