Brunei Flag

Yellow, white and black with the red crest: the flag of Brunei

The flag of Brunei is a yellow field crossed diagonally by two stripes, one white and one black, with the national crest in red at the centre. It is unique in the world: no other country has an all-yellow background.

The yellow of the sultan

In Southeast Asia, among the states of Malay culture, yellow is a common colour, and in Brunei it is the colour of the sultan. Brunei's first flag was simply yellow. In the nineteenth century the sultanate ruled a large part of the island of Borneo; then, little by little, its territories shrank to their present size.

The two stripes of 1906

Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888, and in 1906 two diagonal stripes of different widths were added to the yellow flag. The three colours stood for the three signatories of the 1906 treaty with Britain: yellow for the sultan, white for the first of his two chief ministers, the Pengiran Bendahara, and black for the second, the Pengiran Pemancha.

The crest at the centre

With the constitution of September 1959 the crest arrived at the centre of the flag, in red and yellow. According to tradition it was designed in the fifteenth century by the third sultan of Brunei, Sharif Ali. At the top the royal parasol, a sign of the monarchy; below it, the wings, which protect justice, tranquillity, prosperity and peace; at the sides two open hands, the government's pledge to the people's welfare; in the centre the crescent, symbol of Islam, the state religion.

The motto and independence

Across the crescent runs the Arabic motto «Always render service by the guidance of God», and the ribbon below carries the country's name, «Brunei Darussalam», meaning «Brunei, abode of peace». On 1 January 1984 Brunei became an independent country, and the flag stayed the same, with only small touches to the design.

Who chooses it

For anyone with roots in Brunei or who has lived and worked there, for Southeast Asian communities in Italy and Europe, for fans of the national team, for a business that works with Brunei and Borneo, for a traveller who has seen Bandar Seri Begawan, for a school, a multicultural event or a model UN, for a restaurant or shop and for a collector. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
