British Virgin Islands Flag

Saint Ursula and her lamps: the flag of the British Virgin Islands

The flag of the British Virgin Islands is blue, with the flag of the United Kingdom in the upper corner next to the pole and, on the free side, a green shield. On the shield a young woman dressed in white holds a lamp, surrounded by other golden lamps. Below, a ribbon carries a single Latin word: «Vigilate».

The name given by Columbus

It is said that Christopher Columbus, arriving here in 1493, named these islands «Las Vírgenes» in honour of Saint Ursula and her companions. Inhabited first by the Arawak and then by the Caribs, the islands were settled by the Dutch in 1648 and passed to the English in 1672. Today they are a British overseas territory with its own internal government, and their official name is simply «Virgin Islands».

The legend of Saint Ursula

According to legend, Ursula led eleven thousand virgins, martyred together with her at Cologne. On the shield she is the figure dressed in white, and she holds a lit lamp in her hand. The other eleven golden lamps stand for the eleven thousand companions, a thousand for each lamp.

From the seal to the flag

The symbols on the shield are old and go back to the early nineteenth century, but the islands got an emblem of their own only on 15 November 1960, when the shield was granted as arms, with the motto «Vigilate», meaning «be watchful». In 1999 the shield on the flag was enlarged and given a thin white edge.

Beside the Union Jack

The official state flag remains the Union Jack; since 1969 the blue flag with the arms has been used as a de facto national flag, for instance at the Olympic Games. At sea, the blue flag with the arms is the one used by government vessels. And every 1 July the islands celebrate their own holiday, Territory Day.

Who chooses it

For anyone with roots in the British Virgin Islands living in Italy or Europe, for Caribbean communities, for anyone who has sailed among the islands or spent a holiday there, for a sailor, for a school or a multicultural festival, for a Caribbean-themed bar or shop, for a collector of flags of British territories or a model UN. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
