Description

House of Savoy - Royal Italian Flag

The tricolour with the shield and the crown: the Kingdom of Italy flag

The Kingdom of Italy flag you see here is the green, white and red tricolour in vertical stripes, with the shield of Savoy in the centre of the white stripe, red with a white cross and a blue border, topped by the royal crown. It is the state flag of the Kingdom of Italy, the one our great-grandparents saw on the palaces of the king, of Parliament and of the state.

Charles Albert's proclamation

On 23 March 1848 King Charles Albert announced the First War of Independence to the people of Lombardy-Venetia with a proclamation that ended like this: «to show all the better, with outward signs, the feeling of Italian union, we wish Our Troops (…) to carry the Shield of Savoy placed over the Italian tricolour Flag». The tricolour, born in Reggio Emilia in 1797, became the flag of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The shield and the blue border

The shield is that of the House of Savoy: red with a silver, that is white, cross. Set on the tricolour, though, the white and red of the shield would have merged with the stripes of the flag, and so a blue border was added to it.

From 1861, by custom

On 17 March 1861 the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, and its flag remained, by custom, that of the First War of Independence. There was no law fixing its design, however, except for military standards, and so for decades flags of different shapes circulated, often made as people pleased.

The crown of 1925

Only in 1925 did a law define the models of the national flag and of the state flag. The state flag, to be used at the sovereigns' residences, at the seats of Parliament, in government offices and at diplomatic and consular missions, added the royal crown to the shield: it is the one on this page. The flag flown by merchant ships kept the shield without the crown. After the birth of the Republic, a decree of 19 June 1946 set the new flag, the tricolour without arms, later written into Article 12 of the Constitution.

Who chooses it

For a collector of historic flags, for anyone who loves the Risorgimento and the history of Italy, for a historical re-enactment group of the Risorgimento or of the Great War, for a museum, a school or an exhibition, for a period film or theatre set, for a local history association. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
