What a faded flag in front of your building costs you

A customer parks in front of your building. Before they see your door, your reception or your people, they see the flag on the pole. Its colours have gone pale and the edge is coming apart.

This article tells you what wears a flag out, how to spot the moment to change it, how to make it last longer, and how to stop thinking about it for good.

The mistake: waiting until someone says it

Nobody tells you your flag is worn. Your customers do not, and your team walks under it every morning, so they stop seeing it. The flag fades slowly, and you are the last to notice.

Meanwhile it speaks for you. A torn or faded flag says one thing to everyone who passes: nobody looks after this.

Institutions write it into their rules

Public bodies know what a worn flag says, and some put it in writing. In Italy, the decree on flags at public buildings says that flags are displayed «in buono stato», in good condition, and properly spread out. It also asks every body to name the people who check that its flags are displayed correctly.

The United States Flag Code goes one step further: a flag that is «no longer a fitting emblem for display» should be retired with dignity. You are not bound by either rule. But the reason behind them applies to your logo too.

What wears a flag out

Two things do the work: sun and wind. How fast depends on where your flag flies far more than on the flag itself. A flag on a sheltered courtyard and one on a windy hill by the sea are not living the same life.

Two more things speed it up:

  • Obstacles. A flag that beats against a tree, a wall, another pole or another flag wears out in weeks. The whole circle it can sweep must be free.
  • Dust and smog. Outdoors, the fibre absorbs them over time, and the flag turns grey.

How long a flag lasts

Here is the honest answer: nobody can give you a number of months. We do not, because an honest one does not exist. Indoors a flag lasts practically for ever; outdoors, the place decides.

A flag is a consumable, like the tyres of a car. That is why the 24-month warranty covers defects of manufacture and material, such as a stain or a seam that fails, and not the normal wear caused by use and weather.

What you can decide is the fabric:

  • Nautical Polyester, 115 g/m², the standard for normal outdoor use. Colours stay bright and it dries quickly after rain.
  • Long Life, 120 g/m², for a flag that flies all year. Its denser, knotted weave resists tearing on the pole side.
  • Storm Flag, 115 g/m², for very windy places. Reinforced holes let the gusts through instead of pulling at the seams.

The signs it is time to change it

Look at your flag the way a customer does, from the car park, not from under the pole. Then look at it up close.

  • Colours paler than the logo on your door or your van.
  • Edges that are fraying or coming apart.
  • A tear, however small. The wind makes it bigger.
  • A grey film over the whole flag.

A wash now and then keeps dust and smog from settling into the fibre. Faded colours and frayed edges cannot be washed away: that flag is due.

How to make it last

  • Take it down from wind force 6, around 40 km/h. The wind is always stronger at the top of the pole than on the ground.
  • Keep the circle free. Trim the branch, move the second pole, give each flag its own space.
  • Wash it now and then, by hand in cold or lukewarm water with a mild soap, or in the machine on a short delicate cycle at 30 °C. Hang it spread out; no ironing.
  • Never store it wet.
  • Rotate two flags. Each one flies half the days, and you always have a clean one ready while the other is washed.

Never think about it again

There are two ways, and both take one minute.

A spare in the drawer. The day the worn flag comes down, the new one goes up the same morning. No gap on the pole, no week with an empty mast. Ordering three flags at once costs less: from the third flag, the price drops by 15%.

A fixed date in the calendar. Pick a day, such as the first Monday of spring, and change the flag that day, every year, whatever it looks like. Your customers never see the worn one.

Reordering is simple. Measure the flag you have and pick the same size, and reuse the file from your previous order.

The moment to order

The moment is the day you hoist a new flag. That is the day you order the next one, while the old file is fresh and the pole looks right.

You see the delivery date on the product page before you pay. One Saturday, a classic flag sewn to measure for an address in Rome showed Standard delivery on the Friday after, six days later. If we are late with Express, you get a full refund and the flag is still yours.
